Author visits St. John's for World Book Day

Pupils at St. John's love to read and, as part of World Book Day, the staff and children were delighted to welcome number one bestselling children's author, Maria Burke, to our school. Maria has written the 'Ark of Dun Ruah' series and our pupils are avid fans. Maria is also an accomplished artist and during her visit she discussed how her paintings inspired her stories and vice versa. She also encouraged the children's passion for writing and answered all of their questions, before signing copies of her book and posing for photographs.

St. John's NS Flying High!

The pupils of St. John's NS had an aeronautical adventure recently as part of Engineering Week. Shannon Aerospace Ltd gave the senior pupils an opportunity to attend a unique day of aviation discovery at the Atlantic AirVenture Aviation Centre in Shannon.

Pupils got the chance to learn about the mechanics of jet engines and the workings of a cockpit. A local engine enthusiast was also on hand to demonstrate his handmade, miniature steam engines. A Ryanair pilot then gave the children a great insight into his working life. The highlight of the day for the children, however, was a chance to virtually fly to New York and back, courtesy of the flight simulators.

St. John's NS has been continuing its quiz success. Our team of Arainn Daley, Aaron Duggan, Kyra Collins and Owen Meehan achieved second place in the recent Credit Union quiz in Shannon. A second, younger team of Tom Butler, Davin Dalton and Sen Kirk also did very well and is a good example of the calibre of quiz team we have coming up through the school. Malcolm Simpson of Shannon Credit Union visited St. John's to present the children with their prizes.
