Ethos

The school, under the patronage of the Church of Ireland, will preserve and develop the religious character in accordance with the Church. It aims to serve the community by providing education of the highest quality within the context of Christian belief and practise. It encourages an understanding of the meaning and significance of faith and promotes Christian values through the experience it offers to all.

The school ethos is summarised by the four components of the school crest:

St. John's has, in its history reaching nearly 50 years, been under Church of Ireland patronage within a relationship forming the school with the Presbyterian and Methodist traditions. However, within that broad background, St. John's serves equally children of all religious backgrounds and none. Its religious focus is Christian, and is about education rather than instruction, which is left to parents and churches.

The Church of Ireland in conjunction with the Methodist and Presbyterian Boards of Education put in place a religious education programme entitled "Follow Me" to cater for the moral, religious and spiritual needs of all pupils. The school follows curricular programmes as set down by the Department of Education and Science.

Board of Management

Welcome to St. John's Church of Ireland Primary School, Shannon. We are a small, multi-grade two teacher school serving Shannon and surrounding areas. We provide a warm, caring, positive atmosphere in which all children are taught at their individual level. Our staff seek to develop an education that contributes to the total development of the child - physical, spiritual, cultural, intellectual, social and psychological.

We aim to enable each child to reach her/his unique potential through the child centered curriculum set out by the D.E.S.

As principal, I am proud of the special attention we give to all our students, the high level of achievement they aspire to, and the spirit of collegiality, democracy, harmony and inclusiveness that underpins this. Our school philosophy encourages mutual respect and concern for others. In this regard I am grateful for the support of the staff, Parents' Association, the Board of Management and the wider community.

I am available at any time to meet prospective students and their families.
